About the NHTSA DWI Detection & Field Sobriety Testing Course

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has three standardized field sobriety tests for detecting drunk drivers. Police officers must complete a 24 hour training course to become a certified NHTSA Field Sobriety Testing practitioner. The course must be taught by a certified instructor from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

An officer that completes the NHTSA Field Sobriety Testing Course may testify about the tests and a driver's performance of those tests. When conducted properly, the field sobriety tests are fairly accurate at gauging a person's blood alcohol level. However, if a field sobriety test is conducted improperly, the results are unreliable and speculative.

The standardized field sobriety tests include the:

  • Walk and Turn
  • One Leg Stand
  • Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN)

Experience. Training. Results.

Because Attorney Hilliard has completed the exact same NHTSA Field Sobriety Testing Course as the police, he knows how to defend his clients against these tests. Not only is he extremely familiar with the proper police procedure and test administration, he understands the strategies and evidence that the police use to make a DUI case. When police officers conduct filed sobriety tests improperly, the results are meaningless. Because of his training and experience, Attorney Hilliard is able to spot the errors and highlight them to the judge and jury.
